Leathernecks finish third, Peterman fourth at Thunderbird Invitational

ST. GEORGE, Utah  — Senior Kyle Peterman shot a two-under-par 70 in the final round of the Pat Hicks Thunderbird Invitational Tuesday, Feb. 9 to finish in fourth place individually and help the Western Illinois men's golf team to a third-place team finish.

Peterman shot 72-70—142 for his fifth top-five finish of the 2009-10 season as the Fighting Leathernecks posted a team score of 296-291—587. Western finished just three strokes behind second-place finisher and fellow Summit League member UMKC (584) while College of Charleston won the tournament with a score of 576.

“I thought we put four good scores together, especially having not played in so long,” Blasi said. “We gave ourselves a shot heading into today, but College of Charleston kind of ran away with it.”

Behind Peterman, senior Leatherneck Ryan Franks also dropped two strokes between the first and second rounds to tie for 17th with a 75-73—148. Also for Western, Jake Weeber (74-75—149) and Andrew Godfrey (75-74—149) finished a stroke behind Franks to tie for 19th place while Brian Scott rounded out the scoring with a 76-74—150 to tie for 24th.

“Ryan Franks had a good tournament all the way through,” Blasi said. “He played well in that four spot, and that is something we lacked in the fall.”

Playing as individuals, Tim Harwood came in 63rd (77-85—162), Konrad Deka tied for 64th (80-83—163) and Ben Kilborn came in 66th (84-81—165).

The Leathernecks travel to Ft. Pierce, Fla., March 1-3 to compete in the Treasure Cove Classic.
