ROCHESTER, Mich. - The Western Illinois volleyball team found it hard
to get started offensively against the Summit League's top defense, and was held
to 27 kills in a 3-0 (14-25, 18-25, 18-25) loss at third-place Oakland Saturday
afternoon.
The Golden Grizzlies (16-12, 11-5 Summit League), who limit
opponents to a league-low .144 attack percentage, received double-digit kill
performances from Meghan Bray (15 kills) and Allison Bell (10 kills) and held
the Fighting Leathernecks (8-19, 3-14 Summit League) to a .08 attack
percentage.
Juniors Krissy Bergquist, Megan Toczek and sophomore Katie
Hosteng shared the team lead with six kills. Bergquist added her second solo
block of the season, Hosteng hit .308 on 13 attempts and Toczek had just one
attack error for a .385 attack percentage.
Junior Cait Egan posted four kills and also collected two
solo blocks. Egan is now tied with Tiffany Reedus (1990-94) for sixth place
all-time in program history with 67 career solo blocks.
Setters Heather Smith (14 assists) and Alyssa Holum (10
assists) helped the Leathernecks pick up 26 assists, and senior Ellen Miller had a team-high 10
digs for her 11th consecutive double-digit outing.
Oakland captured nine out of the first ten points in the
first set, and eventually recorded a 25-14 victory. Toczek had three
kills on four attempts, but the Golden Grizzlies posted 13 kills and four aces while
holding Western to seven kills on 27 attempts.
A 4-0 Oakland run early in the second set put the Golden
Grizzlies up 12-6. Western trimmed the Oakland lead to 12-10 with a 4-0 run highlighted by
two blocks and a kill from Bergquist.
Following an Oakland timeout, Bray and Bell went on their own 3-0 run to widen
the Golden Grizzlies lead to 15-10. The Leathernecks never countered with another
run and eventually fell 25-18 to go down 2-0.
Oakland ran out to a 13-8 lead in the third set, but Western
caused an Oakland timeout with a
4-0 run highlighted by kills from Toczek and Hosteng. The Golden Grizzlies came
out of the timeout with a 4-0 run of their own and ultimately captured a 25-18
victory to secure the match win. Hosteng had four kills on seven attempts in
the final stanza.
Western Illinois is back in action Monday night as the
Fighting Leathernecks welcome in-state rival Illinois-Chicago to Western Hall
for a 7 p.m. start. Western seeks its second straight win over the Flames after
last season's 3-1 road victory on Nov. 10, 2009.
