SAN ANTONIO, Texas- The Western Illinois women's basketball team lost its final game of the UTSA Thanksgiving Classic, 67-33, to Navy on Saturday afternoon.

Navy started the game on an 18-4 run before freshman Lunden Roberts hit a three pointer to cut the Midshipmen's (6-2) lead to 11. Navy continued its offensive dominance by going on a 16-4 run to take a 32-13 lead over the Fighting Leathernecks (2-4) at  the 2:59 mark. A Michele Salvatori layup and a Jackie Rieger free throw made the score 37-16 with 19 seconds left in the half, but a made three pointer by Angela Myers as time expired gave the Midshipmen a 24-point lead heading into the locker room.

The Leathernecks were out rebounded by 11 (19-8) in the first half, but had six more steals (9-3) and committed three less turnovers (11-8) than Navy. The Midshipmen shot 69.6 percent from the floor in the first half, shooting 16-for-23 from the floor and 5-for-7 from behind the arc.

Western's defense held Navy to only three made field goals through the first 10:34 of the second half, but were unable to generate much offense as they trailed 51-25. The Leathernecks were able to get within 26 points on two made free throws by La'Paris Newsom with 6:37 left in the game, but the Midshipmen went on a 10-3 run to end the game with a 67-33 victory.

Despite the loss, the Leathernecks committed a season-low 15 turnovers and had a season-high 16 steals. Western was out rebounded by 19 (43-24) in the loss.

We are making a lot of adjustments, especially with our eight newcomers who have never been on the road like this," said Western Illinois assistant coach Todd Schultze. "With them getting a lot of minutes, it's really going to help us down the road as we get ready for conference play."

Ashley Lord and Roberts led the offense with six points each while Anneloes Kodde and Salvatori both added five points. Defensively, Lord and Rieger both pulled down four rebounds and Kodde chipped in three rebounds and a game-high five steals.

"Our team is coming together," said Schultze. "Once we do, we are going to be a good team, we just have to be patient. We will go back home and put things together and get ready for South Dakota State."

The Leathernecks will open Summit League play when they host South Dakota State on Saturday, Dec. 5 at 4:30 p.m.
