Softballs Drops Midweek Contests Against Bradley

Redshirt freshman Kamren Ferguson posted her name in the Western Illinois softball record book with her 147th strikeout of the season, but it wasn?t enough for Western to break out of an eight-game losing streak as the Westerwinds fell to Bradley 4-1 and 10-0. The Braves (19-20) collected single runs in four innings of Tuesday?s opening game for a 4-0 lead in the seventh inning. The Westerwinds (15-27-1) tried to make a comeback in the final inning of the game, and with two outs, senior Ashley Gilland and sophomore Britt Mason posted back-to-back singles. Gilland scored Western?s only run as sophomore Lindsey Hession reached on a Bradley error. Ferguson went the distance for the Westerwinds in game one and struck out six batters while walking just one, and allowed only four runs (two earned) on 11 hits. After today?s performance, Ferguson moved into ninth-place in Western?s single-season pitching record book with 147 strikeouts, and passed Veronica Wilson (142) and Brenda Heyl (121). Western Illinois head coach Holly Van Vlymen leads the single-season list with 355 strikeouts during her senior season in 2000.Bradley took a 4-0 lead in game two as Jacqueline Vitale notched her second home run of the day for one run and two RBI. The Braves went on to collect their fifth run in the second inning, and added two in the fourth and three in the fifth for the 10-0 win.Western?s best chance at a comeback came in the fifth inning as senior Maureen Troller led off with a single. With two outs on the board, Gilland and Mason again recorded back-to-back singles to load the bases, but all runners were left on as a fielder?s choice by Hession ended the game.Junior Christine Drankiewicz took the loss for Western and fell to 3-10 on the season after allowing five runs (all earned) on five hits in 1.1 innings of work. Junior Kim King struck out four and walked two in 3.1 innings, and gave up five runs (four earned) on nine hits. Bradley?s Ashley Birdsong (11-8) allowed just one hit in the shutout during the first four innings of action, and finished the game with four strike outs.For the day, Mason, Gilland and Troller each went 2-for-5 to lead Western at the plate.Western?s 100th win at Mary Ellen McKee Stadium has now remained elusive for seven-straight games, but the chase will continue Thursday afternoon with a 4:30 p.m. contest against Augustana.
