DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. - The Western Illinois University softball team wrapped up the Bethune-Cookman Tournament in Daytona Beach, Fla., Saturday with a 3-1 ledger that included two shutouts.In the opening game, Western Illinois (5-16-1) used a three-run fourth inning to earn a 4-0 win over Iowa State. Senior Ashley Gilland notched the first of Western?s trio of runs in the inning as she crossed the plate on an RBI single from freshman Elysha Swider. Senior Maureen Troller then belted her second home run of the season, a two-run shot to left field off of Alyssa Ransom (5-6). Junior Nicole Green added another home run in the top of the seventh to increase Western?s lead to 4-0.Western Illinois pitcher Kamren Ferguson limited Iowa State (11-10) to just four hits in picking up the win for the Westerwinds and struck out eight batters.Following the win over the Cyclones, the Westerwinds picked up a 5-2 victory over Liberty. Liberty?s loss to Western Illinois snapped the Lady Flames? season-best seven game winning streak.Liberty jumped out on top in the first inning with a 1-0 lead before Western evened the game in the bottom of the second as Troller led off the inning with a double to right center field that was followed by a Rachael Heagney single that drove in Troller and knotted the game at 1-1.The Lady Flames regained the lead in the third as Shannon McKain scored on an error at home plate by Green, but the Westerwinds broke the game open in the bottom of the fourth inning with four runs on four hits. The string started with a two-RBI single to center field by Gilland to drive in Green, who started the inning with a walk, and Britt Mason, who got on base with a bunt single to first base. After a walk was issued to Amy Douglas, Meghan Strazar and Swider followed with back-to-back RBI base hits to left and center fields, respectively, to drive in Gilland and Douglas for the final runs of the game.Ferguson halted a Liberty comeback by striking out two-straight Liberty batters while the bases were loaded. She then retired eight out of the next nine batters to pick up her first save of the season and lock Western?s second victory of the day. Christine Drankiewicz picked up the victory after allowing two runs on seven hits in 4.1 innings of work.Western started off the second day of the Bethune-Cookman Tournament in the same fashion as day one with an 11-0, five-inning shutout over Central Connecticut.Douglas notched the first run of the game on an RBI single by Swider that Troller followed with a two-run homer for the early 3-0 lead. Western posted two additional runs in the fourth as Mason belted her career-first home run and sophomore Lindsey Hession crossed the plate on one of her three steals in the game.The Westerwinds added six additional runs in the fifth inning for the 11-0 victory. Junior pitcher Kim King recorded the win while striking out five batters and walking three.Western concluded the tourney with a 3-0 loss to host Bethune-Cookman Saturday afternoon. BC tallied its three runs in the fourth inning, witch freshman pitcher Courtney Jacobson allowing two and Ferguson giving up one.Troller and Swider earned All-Tournament Team honors for Western, with Troller posting two homers and one double, and Swider finishing the tourney 4-for-12 and batting .333.Western?s 3-1 record in the tourney was enough to have played in tomorrow?s championship game, but due to travel arrangements, the Westerwinds will be unable to participate. Western will return to action March 24-25 when it begins conference action at IUPUI.
