Backup quarterback Will Ducey passed for two touchdowns on the last two drives as Western Illinois recorded a 62-14 loss at Toledo.Ducey, who appeared in his first game as a Leatherneck, connected with true freshman Paul Anderson on a 52-yard pass with 6:11 left in the game to put the Leathernecks (0-1) on the board. Another true freshman, place kicker Taylor Rowan, recorded his first career PAT that added to Western?s effort, 62-7. With 1:04 left in the game, Ducey recorded a 17-yard pass to Carl Simms and Rowan recorded his second point-after to close out the game, 62-14.The Rockets took advantage of some of Western?s mistakes early, as Toledo used a 60-yard interception return to set up for a 33-yard field goal. Western?s defense went on to hold the Rockets (1-0) to two field goals and a total offense of 86 yards in the first quarter. The Rockets tallied four touchdowns in the second quarter, including one by way of a 37-yard fumble return by Nigel Morris. At halftime, Toledo?s total offense of 32 plays for 181 yards closely matched Western?s 38 plays for 126 yards, despite the 41-0 score.Toledo opened the second half with a 94-yard kickoff return for a touchdown by Richard Davis to increase its lead to 48-0. The Rockets went on to score two more times before the Leathernecks tacked on two touchdowns in the final six minutes of play.?It was a really odd first half,? said Western Illinois head coach Don Patterson. ?We did everything wrong in terms of turnovers, which led to the lopsided score.?I thought especially in the first quarter, we did a good job on defense,? added Patterson. ?We gave them terrible field position and held them to a couple of field goals in the first half. In the second half, I think we battled okay. We were tired of course, but no one gave up.?Ducey, a redshirt freshman, went 6-for-9 for 110 yards with one interception and two touchdowns. Starting quarterback Steve LaFalce recorded 11 completions in 19 attempts for 115 yards with two interceptions.Anderson?s 52-yard touchdown reception was his first career reception and touchdown. Sims recorded three receptions for a team-high 60 yards with a touchdown. Running back Travis Glasford recorded 22 carries for 59 yards, and sophomore Alex Douglas recorded eight carries for eight yards.On the defensive end, Will Bailey led the Leathernecks with six total tackles, while Josh Hollie recorded five tackles, including four solo stops. True freshman Trokon Tompo recorded four total tackles, three solo, and a tackled for a loss of two yards in his first appearance. Travis Cherry also recorded four total tackles, three for loss, and a sack for a loss of five yards.Toledo?s Bruce Gradkowski went 9-for-17 for 134 yards with two touchdowns and a no interceptions. Gradkowski also rushed for 15 yards on three carries with a touchdown. Davis led the Rockets with 111 yards rushing on 13 carries with one touchdown, while Andrew Hawkins tallied 64 yards on four receptions and one touchdown.Western Illinois recorded just 64 yards rushing to the Rocket?s 210 yards, but prevailed in the air with 239 yards passing to Toledo?s 191 yards. Toledo recorded 11 kickoffs for 627 yards, compared to Western?s three for 129 yards.?Overall, I was very pleased with the way the defense played,? said Patterson. ?When the game was in doubt, I thought we were very tough.?The Leathernecks open the home slate on Thursday, September 8 when they host Northern Colorado at 7 p.m. on Hanson Field.
