Appel, Jaman Helping Lead Respective PDL Soccer Teams

MACOMB, Ill. - Two Western Illinois University men?s soccer players are helping lead their respective Premier Development League (PDL) soccer clubs this summer. Junior Nowaf Jaman (Safat, Kuwait) has collected four goals and one assist, helping the Chicago Fire Premier team to a 7-0-1 record. Junior Jared Appel (Manhattan, Kan.) leads the Springfield Storm, 3-5-1, with three goals.Jaman collected another two-goal game in a 4-0 victory over the Michigan Bucks on June 11 and currently is tied for second on the team with four goals. Appel recorded two goals in shutout victories over the Nashville Metros (3-0) and Sioux Falls Spitfire (2-0) on June 10 and 11. His play earned him a spot in the starting lineup Friday, against the Colorado Springs Blizzard. Appel collected the lone Storm goal in the 3-1 loss.Three other current Leatherneck players and one former player are also on the Storm roster. Senior Dave Hanlon (Davenport, Iowa), junior Nick Bohnenkamp (Omaha, Neb.) and sophomore Preston Bernardi (Naperville, Ill.), along with recent Western Illinois graduate Brett Thomas, join Appel on the Storm squad.Hanlon has played every minute in goal for the Storm, collecting 36 saves, three shutouts and a 1.70 goals against average. Bohnenkamp and Bernardi have each collected one goal and one assist for the Storm.The Fire Premier are currently in first place in the Great Lakes Division through the first month of the PDL season, while the Storm are in fourth place in the Heartland Division.
