ROCHESTER, Mich. - Senior Jenna Yurs (Elgin, Ill./St. Edwards/Elgin C.C.) became the fourth player in Western Illinois volleyball history to record more than 100 block assists in a season as Western swept Oakland 3-0 (30-23, 30-18, 30-19) Saturday night. Western head coach Kym McKay picked up her first win in the O?Rena after previously falling at Oakland three years straight.Oakland took an early 5-0 lead over Western (13-10, 7-2 Mid-Con) in the first game, but Western bounced back and knotted the score at 9-all and never relinquished its lead after that point. The Purple and Gold outhit the Grizzlies .295 to .122, and posted 18 kills on five errors to OU?s nine errors and 14 kills.Game two was much of the same as the two teams traded points until the 8-all mark. Western posted a six-point rally with junior Jennifer Alexander (Sycamore, Ill./Sycamore) behind the line to go up 19-12 before winning the game on an 11-7 rally. OU was held to a -.022 hitting percentage in the loss and committed 13 errors while Western hit .262 with just three errors.Western led all throughout game three and held Oakland to its second-straight game of less than 20 points for the win. The Purple and Gold hit a match-high .417 with 19 kills while allowing the Grizzlies just 12 kills in the game.Overall, Western hit a season-high .320 in the match and tallied 51 kills with 12 errors to Oakland?s 38 kills and 28 errors. Sophomore Amy Sauerwein (Belleville, Ill./Belleville Althoff Catholic) collected her 12th double-double of the season with 11 kills and 13 digs, and hit a career-high .429. Sophomores Ashley Baker (Fort Wayne, Ind./Effingham [Ill.]) and Mary Olson (Elkhart, Ill./Mt. Pulaski) also notched double-digit kills with 11 and 10, respectively. Alexander added a match-high 20 digs for Western?s defensive efforts, and freshman Sarah Trimpe (Normal, Ill./Normal Community) dished out a match-high 28 assists.Junior Patty Melinauskas came off the bench for eight kills and two blocks, and Yurs tallied seven kills and four blocks. Yurs now has 103 block assists this season. Adrienne Leone was the lone player for Oakland (4-21, 3-6 Mid-Con) to post double-digit kills with 10, and Whitney Lane added eight kills in the effort. Becca Moller led OU with 21 assists and Leone collected a team-high 21 digs.Western?s 13th win of the season matches last year?s win total, which was the most for Western since 1996. Western remains in second place in the Mid-Con standings after tonight?s victory.The Purple and Gold will now remain idle for the week and gear-up for its final two home league matches of the season with next weekend?s visits from fellow Mid-Con members Centenary and Oral Roberts.
