MACOMB, Ill. - Stephen Willis rushed for 146 yards on 26 carries as No. 1 Western Kentucky breezed past Western Illinois, 42-7. The Leathernecks (2-6, 0-4 Gateway) won the toss and elected to receive the opening kickoff, hoping to gain some early momentum, but were forced to punt after a rush for no gain and back-to-back sacks. It was the Hilltoppers (6-0, 4-0 Gateway), instead, who got off to a quick start, scoring on their first play from scrimmage - a 32-yard rush by Lerron Moore. Western Illinois retaliated with its longest series of the game, driving 83 yards on nine plays to tie the score at 7-7. Steve LaFalce completed all five pass attempts during the drive and Travis Glasford capped the drive with a 9-yard scoring run to break Aaron Stecker's (1997-98) career record of 41 rushing touchdowns.?Our intention was to take the ball and score first,? said LaFalce. ?(The 3-and-out) didn?t effect us. We came right back, got in a good rhythm and scored. At that point in the game we felt pretty good about what we were doing offensively.?The Hilltoppers? next two possessions resulted in touchdowns. A two-yard run by Moore capped a five-play, 70-yard drive, and a 13-yard pass from Justin Haddix to Cory Clemons capped a six-play, 30-yard possession that put Western Kentucky up, 21-7, with 3:16 remaining in the first quarter. Moore ran the ball five times for 43 yards and a pair of touchdowns before being sidelined in the first quarter with an injury, allowing Willis to take the remainder of the snaps. The Hilltoppers added a pair of touchdowns in the second quarter - a one-yard run by Haddix that followed eight consecutive rushes and capped a 66-yard drive, and a 41-yard pass to Maurice Perkins that led to a 35-7 halftime lead. Clemons accounted for the final scoring play, catching a three-yard touchdown pass with 13:14 remaining for the only points of the second half. Reggie Gray (Chicago, Ill./Morgan Park) broke Western Illinois? career receiving record with his first catch of the game - a 23-yarder that put the Leathernecks into Western Kentucky territory during the first quarter. Gray ended the night with three catches for 33 yards and brought his career total to 2,269 yards, surpassing the previous record of 2,243 set by Gunnard Twyner from 1993-95.?It?s a mixed feeling,? said Gray. ?I?m honored to be able to break the record, but when I came here as a freshman I came in to win, not necessarily to set records. Winning is what?s on my mind right now.?The Leathernecks were outgained, 491 yards of total offense to 146, and recorded just 19 rushing yards to the Hilltoppers? 270. Western Kentucky had nearly a 13-minute advantage in time of possession and was plus-one on turnovers.?A lot of the credit has to go to Western Kentucky,? said Leatherneck head coach Don Patterson, ?and a lot of the blame has to go to us. ?They possessed the ball well, they ran effectively and they had a very efficient passing game. One frustrating thing was that they had four fumbles and they were able to fall on all four while we lost our only fumble. Sometimes the ball just doesn?t bounce your way, I guess.?Western Kentucky was 12-of-19 for 221 yards passing while the Leathernecks completed 15 of 22 passes for 127 yards. Both teams threw an interception. For Western Illinois? Wyatt Green, it was his second in the last two games.
