VALPARAISO, Ind. - The Western Illinois volleyball team?s seven-match win streak came to an end at Valparaiso as the Crusaders took a 3-0 (24-30, 20-30, 25-30) win to bump Western into second place in the Mid-Continent Conference standings.Sophomore Ashley Baker (Fort Wayne, Ind./Effingham [Ill.]) and freshman Monique Houston (Wheeling, Ill./Wheeling) each tallied eight kills to lead Western?s offense. Houston hit a team-high .174 and pitched in 11 digs. Baker posted 10 digs and one ace while hitting .125.Sophomore Amy Sauerwein (Belleville, Ill./Belleville Althoff Catholic) tallied seven kills, 12 digs and two blocks, and senior Jenna Yurs (Elgin, Ill./St. Edwards/Elgin C.C.) added seven kills and four blocks. Freshman setter Sarah Trimpe (Normal, Ill./Normal Community) collected 31 of Western?s 33 assists, and junior libero Jennifer Alexander (Sycamore, Ill./Sycamore) posted 12 digs.Amy Palash led Valpo?s offense with a match-high 14 kills and added 10 digs. Jessie Fox also had double-digit kills for the Crusaders (17-5, 7-1 Mid-Con) with 12 and added five blocks. Katie Bova tallied two match-highs with 39 assists and 21 digs.Valpo held Western to a season-low 36 kills, and held the advantage in all statistical categories. The Crusaders hit .238 to the Purple and Gold?s .072, and outdug Western 55-51. Valpo tallied nine blocks to Western?s eight, and led with four service aces.Western (12-10, 6-2 Mid-Con) will wrap up the weekend with a Saturday evening match at Oakland. A win at the O?Rena would mark the first for Western Illinois head coach Kym McKay since taking the reigns of the program in 2002. First serve for the match is slated for 6 p.m. CST in Rochester, Mich.
