MACOMB, Ill. - The Western Illinois University men?s basketball team will honor seniors Bobby Carter, Andre Charles, Michael Haywood, J.D. Summers and Barry Welsh in a Senior Night ceremony held prior to the home finale this Thursday in Western Hall. As part of Fan Appreciation Night, fans will be admitted for $1 to the 7 p.m. matchup against IUPUI.
Carter, a 6-3 forward from Oklahoma City, Okla., has been a member of the Leatherneck lineup for the past two seasons after transferring from Cloud County Community College. He has started 33 of his 52 career games and has increased his scoring average to more than 10 points per game as a senior. A 73 percent career free throw shooter, he has hit nearly 50 percent of his field goal attempts this year and over 40 percent of his three-point attempts. Carter has scored a career-high 19 points on four occasions and currently leads the team with eight blocked shots.
Charles, a 6-8 forward/center from Chicago, Ill., has been a 54 percent field goal shooter over his two-year career at Western Illinois. After helping Redland Community College to the 2002 national title, he has appeared in 50 games for the Leathernecks, averaging 3.2 points and 1.4 rebounds per game. His senior year scoring average is currently 10.2 points per game - the highest average of any active player on the Leatherneck roster. He recorded career highs of 14 points against Chicago State in 2003 and 11 rebounds against Eastern Illinois in 2002.
Haywood, a 6-1 guard from Carbondale, Ill., is completing his first season at Western Illinois. He has come off the bench in 21 games, averaging 4.3 minutes per outing and grabbing a total of seven rebounds. He recorded his first career Division I basket with a three-pointer at UMKC.
Summers, the only four-year letterwinner on this year?s squad, is just 18 points shy of 1,000 career points. One of the top 20 scorers in Western Illinois history, the 6-3 guard from Quincy, Ill., has started over 80 percent of his 103 games, which are just 15 shy of the school record for most games played in a career. He has led the Leathernecks in scoring each of the past two years. An all-conference honoree in 2003, he scored a career-high 25 points versus Youngstown State as a sophomore, and grabbed a career-high 14 rebounds against Chicago State last season. Summers has averaged 9.3 points and 4.3 rebounds per game throughout his career, including 12.6 points over the last two years.
Welsh, a 6-foot guard from Abingdon, Ill., has recorded one of the best assist-to-turnover ratios in school history, compiling 120 assists and 45 turnovers throughout his two seasons at Western Illinois. He currently leads all Mid-Continent players in that category with a ratio of 4.88. He has contributed nearly 20 minutes per game after transferring to the Leathernecks from Indiana State, averaging 2.6 points and 1.4 rebounds over 43 career contests.
