Oakland Snaps Men?s Soccer Four-Game Winning Streak

ROCHESTER, Mich. - Western Illinois goalkeeper, junior David Hanlon (Davenport, Iowa) and the Leatherneck defense could not shut down the attack from the Oakland offense Saturday, falling to the Golden Grizzlies, 3-0, at OU Field.For most of the first half, the ball was contolled in the midfield with Western only taking three shots in the period, while Oakland only attempted four. The Leathernecks had two early opportunities with sophomore Nick Bohnenkamp (Omaha, Neb.) taking a shot only to have it go wide of the net. Sophomore Elton Fernandes (Toronto, Ontario) came up empty on an ample opportunity as he went one-on-one with Oakland goalie, Jeff Wiese, but could not convert.In the 37th minute, Oakland got on the scoreboard first after a loose ball in the box deflected off a Western player and into the goal for the Oakland own goal. In the last minute of the first half, Shahar Ktovim took a pass from Bjoernar Hansen on the right side and beat Hanlon to put Oakland up 2-0 going into halftime.At the start of the second half, Western had two early opportunities to cut into the Golden Grizzlie lead as senior Lorenzo Zignago (Green Acres, Fla.) and sophomore Nowaf Jaman (Safat, Kuwait) each collected a shot on goal only to have them stopped by Wiese. Oakland?s Chris Edwards netted the final goal of the game after he was awarded a free kick from the top of the box and put it past Hanlon, to give Oakland the 3-0 lead.Hanlon collected four saves in the game, while Wiese garnered six for Oakland. Wiese is ranked ninth in the nation in goals against average in the latest NCAA standings with a 0.48 average.Zignago led the Leathernecks with three shots with all of them being on goal, while Jaman collected two shots and one on goal. Jim Denk and Alex McDonald led Oakland with two shots and one on goal each. Oakland outshot Western 12-8 in the match.Western (5-5, 1-1 Mid-Con) will face the Detroit Titans Sunday at Titan Field. Kickoff is scheduled for 2 p.m.
