FORT WAYNE, lnd. - Seven members of the Western Illinois
track and field squad were named to the 2012 All-Summit League team as
announced Sunday (Feb. 26) by the league office. Chelsea Lynes (Woodstock, Ontario/Huron Park), Amy Byers (Ferris, Ill./Illini West),
Carianna Cottone (Bloomington, Ill./Normal Community West), Krystle Eskridge (Glendale Heights, Ill./Glenbard East), Dana LaRue (South Holland, Ill./Thornwood), Michael Crabtree (Hampton, Ill./United Township) and Jamario Taylor (Aurora, Ill./East Aurora) picked up All-League honors.
The top three athletes in each event after
The Summit League Indoor Championships earned the award. Cottone, Eskridge and Crabtree are first-time All-League selections. Taylor (2011
Indoor) and Lynes (2011 Outdoor) have both been named to two All-League squads.
This is the fourth All-League honor for Byers (2009 Indoor, 2010 Indoor,
2010 Outdoor) while LaRue (2009 Indoor, 2009 Outdoor, 2010 Indoor, 2011 Outdoor)
has been named to five All-League teams overall.
The women's distance medley relay squad captured Western Illinois' lone
title at the championships and set a meet record in the process. Cottone,
Byers, Eskridge and Lynes recorded a time of 11:57.67 and dominated the rest of
the field as North Dakota State was five seconds behind in second place
(12:02.76). The DMR mark is the second fastest time in program history and
easily bests the previous meet record held by North Dakota State in 2011
(12:02.73).
Cottone also placed second in the women's 5,000-meter run with a personal
best time of 17:10.54. Her effort is the second fastest in program history
behind two-time All-American Patty Murray (17:10.34).
Lynes used a time of 4:58.55 to finish second in the women's one-mile run on
the second day of competition. She fell just short of defeating Southern Utah's
Diana Medina, who won the event with a time of 4:57.14.
LaRue tied her personal best mark in the women's weight throw (59-02.00) on
Friday and placed second overall. On Day Two, LaRue finished third in the
women's shot put with a mark of 48-05.50.
Crabtree and Taylor placed second and third, respectively, in the men's high
jump. Both athletes cleared a height of 6-09.00 and fell short of South Dakota
State's Jared Vlastuin (7-01.00). Crabtree set a personal best with his effort,
which ranks eighth in program history.
Western's final event of the indoor season is Saturday (March 3) at the Last
Chance Qualifier hosted by Iowa State. Cottone and Lynes will attempt to qualify for the NCAA Indoor Championships, which take
place in Boise, Idaho on March 9 and 10.
