Leathernecks Capture OVC Tournament Title with 71–65 Win Over Lindenwood

By Emma Hicken, Leatherneck Athletic Communications

MACOMB, Ill.- The Western Illinois women's basketball team secured the program's Ohio Valley Conference Tournament championship on Saturday afternoon, defeating Lindenwood 71–65 at the Ford Center. With the victory, the Leathernecks improved to 26-5 on the season and claimed the league's automatic bid to the NCAA Tournament.

Western Illinois set the tone early, opening the game with an efficient offensive performance to take a 20-11 lead after the first quarter. The Leathernecks continued to build momentum in the second period, shooting 50 percent from the field and extending their advantage to 36-22 at halftime.

Lindenwood made its push in the third quarter, outscoring Western Illinois 28-18 behind a strong shooting stretch to cut the deficit to four entering the final period. Despite the Lions' rally, the Leathernecks stayed composed down the stretch, converting key free throws and defensive stops in the closing minutes to secure the 71-65 victory.

Senior Mia Nicastro led Western Illinois with 21 points and a game-high 12 rebounds for a double-double, while also going 7-for-8 from the free throw line. Mallory Shetley added 18 points on an efficient 8-of-11 shooting night, and Allie Meadows contributed 10 points and three assists. Madison Davis provided a spark off the bench with 10 points.

As a team, the Leathernecks shot 55.3 percent from the field and controlled the glass with a 38-22 rebounding advantage. Western Illinois also capitalized at the free throw line, converting 15-of-19 attempts to hold off the late Lindenwood push.

With the win, Western Illinois claims the OVC Tournament title and punches its ticket to the NCAA Tournament for the first time since joining the conference.
