Leathernecks Fall to Boilermakers On the Road

MACOMB, IL – Western Illinois women's soccer battled through a tough road test Sunday, falling 4-0 to Big Ten opponent Purdue at Folk Field.

The Leathernecks turned in a determined defensive effort, highlighted by goalkeeper Ariel Bernard, who made 10 saves across 90 minutes. She recorded five saves in each half, keeping WIU in striking distance for the entirety of the first half.

Western Illinois held Purdue to a single first-half goal and continued to compete deep into the second half before the Boilermakers pulled away late. Despite being under heavy pressure, the Leathernecks back line continued to fend off shots from the Boilermakers who had 37 shots in total.

Several Leathernecks logged significant minutes against the Big Ten opponent. Simone Thorst played all 90 minutes, while Daniela Gularte, Hilary Halpin, and Ava Bell logged more than 70 minutes apiece.

Western Illinois moves to 1-6-0 on the season and will look to bounce back at home against Valparaiso on Thursday.
