MACOMB, IL – Western Illinois women's soccer struck first but couldn't hold off a strong Valparaiso attack, falling 5-1 Thursday evening at Northwest Field.
The Leathernecks wasted no time getting on the board, as freshman Abigail Schilling scored her first career goal just 79 seconds into the match to give WIU an early lead. Valparaiso, however, responded with four goals in the opening 20 minutes, including two from Kiara Desiderio, to take control of the match.
Western Illinois settled in during the second half, generating six shots and earning a penalty opportunity in the 79th minute, but Kayla Turner's attempt was saved. Goalkeeper Ariel Bernard finished with six saves in the effort.
WIU moves to 1-7 on the season. The Leathernecks return home Sunday to host Omaha at Northwest Field.
