MACOMB, IL – Western Illinois women's soccer dropped a 1-0 decision on the road Sunday afternoon at Morehead State in the opener of Ohio Valley Conference play.
The Eagles scored the lone goal of the match in the 38th minute when Addison Petry finished off an assist from Hailey Repreza.
Freshman goalkeeper Lillian Johns, making just her second career start, kept the Leathernecks in the match with 11 saves against 28 total shots faced, including six in the first half and five more after the break.
Offensively, WIU created nine shots with six on target. Hattie Mourning led with two attempts, while Abigail Schilling, Kayla Turner, Autumn Wilson, Simone Thorst, and Ava Bell each placed a shot on goal.
Defensively, the back line of Daniela Gularte, Perla Rios, and Ava Bell helped limit Morehead State to just one score despite constant pressure.
Hilary Halpin picked up a yellow card in the 79th minute for the Leathernecks, who were whistled for 10 fouls overall.
Morehead State (3-7-0, 1-0-0 OVC) held a 28-9 advantage in shots and 5-3 edge in corner kicks. Goalkeeper Claire Cress earned the shutout with four saves.
Western Illinois (1-10-0, 0-1-0 OVC) returns to action Thursday at home against Eastern Illinois.
