Macomb, IL, The Western Illinois Women's Soccer team opened its season at home against the Saint Ambrose Fighting Bees. WIU, looking to start the season on a high note with new head coach Ross Henderson leading the team, went into the half tied at 0-0. WIU took the lead in the 46th minute with a goal from fifth-year senior midfielder Kayla Turner. This strong start to the half allowed WIU to continue putting pressure on the Fighting Bees throughout the game until Turner scored her 2nd goal of the night on a left-foot shot that went in on the top right of the goal in the 87th minute. This late goal helped stop any late push from the Fighting Bee's which gave Western Illinois its first win of the season. This is the first time WIU has started 1-0 since 2019.

WIU sophomore goalie Ariel Bernard continued her success from last season with two saves and no goals allowed. She totaled all 90 minutes played and was a steady force for WIU. Three other players for WIU totaled 90 minutes played, including 5th-year senior defender Daniela Gularte, senior midfielder Samantha Claesson, and senior midfielder Hana Doudi.
Daoudi and McMurtrey led the team in shots, with each tallying four apiece. Turner was right behind them with three shots. Freshman midfielder Madeline Stickelmaier tallied one assist on Turner's 2nd goal.

Saint Ambrose had an opportunity in the 87th minute with a shot that was blocked and a shot that missed to the left. This sequence of events led to the goal that WIU scored in the same minute.

Western Illinois will look to keep the hot start going when it takes on Drake on August 21st.
