Macomb, IL, Western Illinois Women's Soccer fell 5-0 to Drake Thursday afternoon. The Leathernecks entered the match looking to build on their first win of the season, but could not slow down a Bulldogs team projected to finish near the top of the Missouri Valley Conference.
Drake controlled much of the first half, putting pressure on the WIU back line from the opening minutes. Goalkeeper Ariel Bernard made several early saves, including stops in the 10th and 11th minutes, to keep the game scoreless. The Bulldogs broke through in the 27th minute on a goal from Eve Blakey. The Leathernecks went into the half scoreless, though only trailing by 1.
The Bulldogs extended their advantage throughout the first half with multiple goals, which extended the lead to 5-0.
Western Illinois now turns the page to its next non-conference contest, a road matchup at Northern Iowa in Cedar Falls on Sunday, August 24.
