MACOMB, Ill.- The Western Illinois University Baseball community is saddened to share the passing of beloved alumnus, teammate, and friend Dennis Mantick who passed away on Monday, July 21, just days after celebrating his 71st birthday on July 17.
Dennis was a standout second baseman for the Leathernecks from 1973 to 1975, wearing uniform #10 and earning his place as one of the most celebrated players in WIU Baseball history. A two-time inductee into the WIU Athletics Hall of Fame- first as an individual in 2003 and again in 2019 as part of the legendary 1974 team- Dennis's contributions to the program remain etched in the record books and in the hearts of those who knew him.
In 1974, Dennis led the team with an outstanding .391 batting average and set WIU single-season records in at-bats (151), runs scored (43), hits (59), triples (9), and total bases (92). His nine triples in a single season still stand as a WIU record. He also ranks sixth in career triples (11) and sixth in career stolen bases (48).
After his junior season, Dennis was selected by the Minnesota Twins in the 13th round of the 1975 MLB Draft. He went on to play four years in the Twins organization, reaching the AAA level.
More than just a phenomenal athlete, Dennis was known for his character, his loyalty as a teammate, and his lasting friendships throughout the WIU Baseball community. Whether you played beside him, met him at a WIU Baseball Alumni event, or simply had the honor of knowing him, you knew Dennis as one of the all-time greats.
A visitation will be held on Sunday July 27, from 2-4 PM at Redeemer Lutheran Church in Peoria, Ill., followed by a funeral service at 4:00 PM at the same location. Full details, along with an opportunity to share condolences and memories, are available at Dennis Mantick Obituary.
We extend our deepest condolences to Dennis's family- his wife Debby, son Kyle, and daughter Kelly-and ask the WIU Baseball community to keep them in your thoughts and prayers during this difficult time.
