WIU Drops Opener At Little Rock

MACOMB, Ill- WIU Baseball opened up their three game series at Little Rock with a 10-8 loss on Thursday night in Little Rock, Arkansas. The Leathernecks collected 15 hits as a team, but committed three errors defensively, all resulting in runs scored for the Trojans.

After Little Rock jumped out to a 5-0 lead, WIU would respond in a big way. Billy Humphrey would come in to pitch in the bottom of the third, and held the Trojans to two hits over the next three innings without allowing a run. Humphrey struck out two batters as well to keep the game within reach after five innings of play. In the top of the sixth, the Leathernecks would take the lead as they would put up six runs on five hits. Matt Olive and Kenneth Perez would lead off the inning with back-to-back singles, followed by a Kyree Alexander walk to load the bases. After the Trojans made a pitching change, Justin Bogard had a two-run double to center field to cut into the Little Rock lead, making it a 5-2 game with still nobody out and runners on second and third. A couple batters later, Krayton Morse would come a few feet short of hitting a grand slam with a two-run double off the left field wall making it a one run game with one out in the inning. Tyler Large would give the Leathernecks the lead on a two-run, two-out single to center field, making it a brand new ball game.

However, Little Rock would score four runs of their own in the bottom of the sixth inning to retake the lead by a score of 9-6. The score would remain the same until the top of the eighth inning, when the Leathernecks would put up a two spot. Morse would have a one-out single to right field, followed by a Paul Osting double to put two runners in scoring position. On the next at bat, Large would draw a walk to load the bases for Olive. Olive would send a breaking ball the other way to right field on an 0-2 count to collect a one-out RBI single making it a 9-7 game. WIU would get another run back on a wild pitch to make it a one run game heading into the bottom of the eighth. With two outs in the bottom of the eighth and runners on the corners, the Leathernecks would commit an error on a ground ball that should've ended the inning, allowing Little Rock to take a 10-8 lead heading into the final inning.

Brock Lummus would get a one-out single in the top of the ninth, but the offense would come up just short as the next two batters would strike out to end the game. Justin Bogard and Liam Bushey led the way offensively for WIU, as they both had three hits on the evening. Bogard would finish the game 3-5 with two RBI, while Bushey would go 3-6 with three singles.

The Leathernecks will look to bounce back and tie the series at one game apiece tomorrow night. First pitch is scheduled for 4 p.m.
