Leathernecks Drop Series Opener At UT Martin

MACOMB, Ill- The Western Illinois Baseball team was defeated in the OVC series opener with UT Martin on Friday night by a score of 4-3. Starter Max Tripure pitched 6.1 innings allowing seven hits and giving up two runs to get the quality start. Despite the quality start from Tripure, the Leathernecks were only able to push across three runs on nine hits.

After the Skyhawks scored one run in the bottom of the first, Tripure would go the next three innings without allowing a run. In the top of the fifth inning, WIU would get on the board to tie the game at one. Kenneth Perez would lead off the inning with a single to center field and Wandel Campana would get a SAC bunt to advance Perez to second. Perez would come around to score on a two-out RBI single by Kyree Alexander, who continues to come through for the Leatherneck offense in clutch moments. However, UT Martin would immediately respond in the bottom of the fifth with a run of their own to regain the lead at 2-1.

The score would remain the same until the top of seventh when WIU would tie the game once again. Campana would lead off the inning with a walk and would come around to score the following at bat as Matt Olive would get an RBI double in the right center gap to tie the game at two. Jason Buhl would enter for Tripure in the bottom of the seventh with one out, and would strike out two batters to get out of the inning still knotted at two. The Skyhawks would score two runs in the bottom of the eighth inning to take a 4-2 lead headed into the final frame.

The Leathernecks would not go down without a fight as Olive would lead off the ninth inning with a walk. Liam Bushey would advance Olive to third on a one-out double to left center to start the comeback attempt. Krayton Morse would follow Bushey's at bat with an RBI SAC fly to left field to cut into the UT Martin lead, making it a 4-3 game with two outs in the inning. The comeback would fall just short as Tyler Large would fly out to center field to end the game.

Kenneth Perez, Paul Osting, and Liam Bushey led the offense tonight, each collecting two hits. WIU is back in action tommorrow afternoon for game two of the series with UT Martin. First pitch is set for 3 p.m.
