WIU Evens Series With Win At UT Martin

MACOMB, Ill- The Leatherneck baseball team picked up a much needed win on Saturday afternoon, defeating UT Martin in game two of a three-game series by a score of 7-6. WIU would jump out to a 4-1 lead and would be up by as much as five in the win over the Skyhawks.

The offense got going right away in the top of the first inning when the Leathernecks would get three straight singles to immediately load the bases. Tyler Large would get WIU on the board with a SAC fly to centerfield allowing Liam Bushey to score, and Krayton Morse would come around to score after a throwing error by the Skyhawks catcher to make it a 2-0 lead.

After UT Martin scored one run in the bottom of the first, the Leathernecks would add on to their lead in the top of the second. Justin Bogard would start things off with a one-out single to right field and would advance to second on a wild pitch. Bushey would then get a two-out walk and both Bogard and Bushey would come around to score on a two-out double by Morse making it a 4-1 lead after 1.5 innings.

WIU would continue to add on to their lead in the fourth and fifth innings to take a 7-2 lead into the sixth inning. In the top of the fourth, Brock Lummus hit a solo home run to left field to make it a 5-2 lead for the Leathernecks. In the following inning, Kenneth Perez would hit an RBI double allowing Paul Osting to score followed by a Kyree Alexander SAC fly making it 7-2. The Skyhawks would make things interesting however, as they scored three in the bottom of the sixth and one in the bottom of the seventh to make it a one-run game.

The bullpen would get the job done for the Leathernecks as Karsten Stotlar and Jorge Romero pitched a combined 3.1 innings in relief. Stotlar and Romero combined for one hit on one earned run and only one walk. Frederick Romano got the start for WIU and would retire eight straight batters in the third through fifth innings to keep WIU in front. Romano finished the game allowing seven hits in 5.2 innings of work, striking out four. Romero would get his first save of the season pitching 2.2 innings out of the bullpen without allowing a single hit.

The Leathernecks will look to take their first OVC series of the season tomorrow afternoon in the rubber match with UT Martin. First pitch is scheduled for 1 p.m.
