NASHVILLE, TN- The Western Illinois Leatherneck Men's Basketball team put up a strong fight but ultimately fell short against Tennessee State, losing 87-69 at the Gentry Center on Thursday night.
The Leathernecks (8-16, 2-11 OVC) started strong, keeping pace with the Tigers (11-13, 7-6 OVC) in the first half and trailed by just five at the break, 38-33. However, Tennessee State took control in the second half, outscoring Western Illinois 49-36 to seal the victory.
Trey Deveaux led the way for the Leathernecks scoring 18 points and adding eight rebounds, while Marko Maletic scored 17 points, hitting five three-pointers and grabbing seven rebounds. Julius Rollins contributed 14 points and three triples and the Leathernecks hit 11 three-pointers in the game but struggled with turnovers, committing 19 compared to Tennessee State's 10.
Tennessee State capitalized on those mistakes, scoring 33 points off turnovers. The Tigers also dominated the paint, outscoring the Leathernecks 38-26 inside. Aaron Nkrumah led TSU with 14 points and eight rebounds, while Justus Jackson and Travis Harper II each chipped in 13 points.
WIU is back in action Saturday afternoon at UT Martin. Tip off is scheduled for 3:30 p.m.
