Macomb, IL. – Western Illinois University Athletics is proud to recognize Breast Cancer

Awareness Month by supporting the McDonough District Hospital (MDH) Foundation in its efforts to raise funds for a new mammography imaging system.Throughout October, Leatherneck student-athletes across WIU's fall sports have incorporated pink into their gameday attire to show support for those affected by breast cancer.

Highlighting these efforts, Leatherneck Volleyball will host its annual "Dig for a Cure" match this Friday, October 24, at Western Hall. The team will wear special pink T-shirts during the match to raise awareness for breast cancer and show support for those affected by the disease. McDonough District Hospital will have a resource table at the event, which will include a donation station for fans who wish to support their new mammography imaging system. WIU Athletics' fundraising campaign will run through November 14, and supporters may donate at any time in any method they prefer. Fans who donate $10 or more at the October 24 match will receive a pink Breast Cancer Awareness sweatband as a thank-you.

"One of the most powerful tools we have in the fight against breast cancer is mammography," says Brittany Moore, Director of the Foundation. She notes the hospital's current system is nearing the end of its service life and that a new unit will double imaging resolution, reduce interpretation time for radiologists, and improve patient comfort with SmartCurve technology.

Moore adds, "Every gift, large or small, brings us closer to ensuring women in our community have access to the best in breast health, and helps detect cancer earlier, treat it faster, and save more lives."

WIU Athletics encourages all Leatherneck fans to join the team in wearing pink at the Volleyball game on October 24 to support breast cancer awareness.
