MACOMB, Ill. – Western Illinois University Athletics continues to see student-athletes produce academic success at high levels as the Leathernecks posted a departmental grade point average (GPA) of 3.38 during the fall 2024 semester. More than 70 percent of all Leatherneck student-athletes earned a 3.0 GPA or better.
"Our student-athletes are accomplishing great things in the classroom," said Director of Athletics Paul A. Bubb. "I am very proud of the way Leatherneck student-athletes balance their commitments to academics and athletics, and our fall departmental GPA is a direct representation of their success."
Sixteen programs earned a cumulative team GPA of 3.0 or better and 49 student-athletes earned a perfect 4.0 during the fall semester. Women's Basketball led the way for all teams with a 3.85 GPA, while the Men's Soccer program had the top GPA on the men's side with a 3.382.
In addition to excellent GPAs, WIU Athletics is proud to have all teams post single-year Academic Progress Rates (APR) above 930 during the 2023-24 academic year. The APR uses formulas related to student-athlete retention and eligibility to measure the academic performance of all participants who receive grants-in-aid on every team at every NCAA Division I college and university. It provides a real-time look at a team's academic success each semester by tracking the academic progress of each student-athlete, as well as a clear picture of the academic culture of each team to provide support that may be needed.
The 2024 APR report features a four-year compilation of data from the 2019-20, 2020-21, 2021-22 and 2022-23 academic years. Women's Golf and Women's Tennis posted perfect multi-year scores of 1,000, while Men's Cross Country, Women's Basketball, and Softball also posted perfect single-year scores of 1,000 for 2023-24.
