EVANSVILLE, IN- Western Illinois Men's Basketball (8-11, 2-6 OVC) put forth a strong effort but ultimately came up short against the Southern Indiana Screaming Eagles (8-10, 3-5 OVC), losing 78-66 at Liberty Arena in Evansville, IN on Saturday afternoon.
The Leathernecks relied heavily on their backcourt for scoring, with Sean Smith delivering a standout performance. Smith poured in a game-high 26 points, connecting on 10 of 20 shots from the field, including five three-pointers. He also added three rebounds, two assists, and a steal, showcasing his all-around game. Ryan Myers complemented Smith with 20 points on an efficient 8-of-13 shooting, including four three-pointers, and contributed defensively with two rebounds. Marko Maletic chipped in 14 points, hitting six of his 14 attempts and adding two steals to his stat line.
The Leathernecks shot 43.3% from the field in the first half and nailed six of seven three-point attempts, trailing by just seven points at halftime (39-32). However, the Leathernecks couldn't get the stop that they needed in the second half, despite scoring 34 points.
On the boards, WIU was out-rebounded 37-27, including an 11-5 disadvantage in offensive rebounds. Tay Knox and Trey Deveaux led the effort in the paint, combining for 11 rebounds, but the team struggled to match Southern Indiana's physicality and second-chance scoring.
The Leathernecks excelled in ball security, committing only six turnovers while forcing 10 from Southern Indiana. They turned these opportunities into 10 points off turnovers but couldn't fully capitalize due to limited scoring contributions outside their starting lineup. WIU's bench provided just six points, compared to 12 from Southern Indiana's reserves.
Defensively, WIU showed flashes of intensity, recording seven steals and two blocks, but Southern Indiana's balanced attack proved too much. The Screaming Eagles shot 50.9% from the field, with key performances from Damoni Harrison (26 points) and Jack Mielke (17 points, 11 rebounds).
Western Illinois will now return home to host four straight home games inside of Western Hall. The Leathernecks are back in action on Thursday night at 7:30 p.m. hosting the Trojans of Little Rock.
