Leathernecks Fall in League Opener

Western Illinois took a tough loss to Liberty on Saturday night.

LYNCHBURG, Vir,. - Western Illinois University Men's Soccer entered Saturday night's conference opener on a hot streak. The Leathernecks had won three straight and five of their last six, but the Liberty Flames handled WIU comfortably in the league play opener.

Western Illinois conceded to the OVC's leader in goals, Michael Huss, as he put one in in the 17th minute to give Liberty an early lead. The Leatherneck defense kept the score at one-nil until the half.

Huss scored again in the 55th to give Liberty a 2-0 lead, then completed a hat trick in the 61st minute, putting the Flames up 3-0. Leatherneck captain Joel McIntyre was sent off on a red card in the 65th, meaning he'll have to sit out next Thursday's matchup at Houston Christian.

Leatherneck forward Liam Gainey scored his fifth goal of the season to give the Leathernecks some hope to play with ten men, but then the Flames started to pull away. They added four goals over the next 33 minutes, as the match finished 7-1.

Western Illinois lost the shot battle 18-6, and the corner battle 8-3.

The Leathernecks continue OVC play on Thursday, taking on HCU in Houston.
