Leathernecks Open Conference Season with Loss at Lindenwood

Western Illinois held on for 75 minutes before the Lions put in the game-winner, a 1-0 loss for the Leathernecks

ST. CHARLES, MO. - Western Illinois University women's soccer kicked off OVC play on Sunday afternoon, traveling to Lindenwood. The Leathernecks defeated the Lions in last year's season finale, but Sunday's match was a different story as the Leathernecks were outshot 31-1 in the conference opener.

Lindenwood dominated from the first to the final whistle, holding the ball in Western's third for the majority of the match. The defense did a good job clearing out balls in the first half, as the back three of Ali Matthews, Rachel Balinao, and Rita Moran all played well.

Keeper Ariel Bernard had a great performance, saving ten of eleven shots on goal. The Lions scored the winner in the 76th minute on a solid goal from Sophia Mueller.

Lindenwood won the corner battle as well, eight-to-one, and WIU was handed five yellow cards the match.

Western Illinois will take on Morehead State next Thursday at John MacKenzie Alumni Field in the conference home opener.
