Western Illinois Falls at Home to Morehead State

WIU women’s soccer dropped its first of five conference home matches, losing to Morehead State, 2-0.

MACOMB, Ill. - Western Illinois University women's soccer kicked off their first conference home match of the season, also their first home match in 18 days. The Leathernecks most recently opened league play with a 1-0 loss at Lindenwood, and looked to turn things around in Thursday's match. Morehead State capitalized on defensive mistakes and took a 1-0 lead in the first half, then killed the Leathernecks' hopes of a late equalizer with an 88th-minute goal to seal the Eagle victory.

Ariel Bernard, who has done a solid job in goal over her first six matches, got the start in between the sticks again. The freshman tallied four first-half saves in the match, including a great first save off a poorly cleared ball by a Leatherneck defender. Bernard faced 19 shots in the match as the Leathernecks were out-shot again, this time 19-3. In her seven starts, Bernard has faced no less than 16 shots in any match.

Morehead State got on the board in the 25th minute, and the Eagles did not look back from there as they held possession for the majority of the match, getting good looks in WIU's third. Morehead State won the corner battle, 5-1, showing their ability to keep possession in the opponent's territory.

The Eagles added a second goal late in the second half, just a few minutes after WIU had a decent chance of their own, but couldn't capitalize. 2-0 ended up the final score as the Eagles, one of the best sides in the OVC, improved to 2-0-0 while the Leathernecks fell to 0-0-2 on the year.

Western Illinois Women's Soccer is back in action on Sunday, taking on Southeast Missouri State in Cape Girardeau.
