35th Annual Purple and Gold Gala a Success

| By:

MACOMB, Ill. – Leatherneck Athletics hosted its 35th Annual Purple and Gold Gala on Saturday, August 10, and once again the event proved to be a success by all measures.

The event returned to Western Hall this year, after having been the University Union Grand Ballroom in 2023, and approximately 300 guests were in attendance. The sneaker soiree theme continued for the second straight year, and attendees wore their favorite shoes, some of which included purple and gold designs and others with soles that lit up with purple lights.

"Although the university has faced some major challenges in recent weeks, it was great to see so many people come together to celebrate positive things that are happening at WIU and in athletics," said Director of Athletics Paul Bubb. "Our athletic department experienced some great success in our first year in the Ohio Valley Conference, and we are looking forward to reaching new heights in year two."

The silent and live auctions, along with the raffle and other contributions, generated over $50,000 for Leatherneck Athletics. A special "Fund A Need" during the live auction raised $8,800 for the Leatherneck Cheer, Dance, and Marching/Pep Bands that perform at Leatherneck home games.

The Gala included its usual silent auction and reception, which began at 5 p.m. In addition to over 125 silent auction items, guests had the opportunity to purchase a ticket for one of two $500 cash drawings. In place of a formal dinner, guests were able to graze at a variety of food stations throughout the night.

Guests also had the opportunity to tour Western Hall and see how past events have assisted in providing an exceptional Leatherneck student-athlete experience through funds raised for the Fuel Zone, strength and conditioning equipment, and team locker rooms updates.

Bubb started the evening's program with remarks on the achievements of the athletic department before introducing former Leatherneck quarterback Sean McGuire, who spoke about how special his time was at Western. McGuire shared how he decided WIU was the right place to continue his athletic career, and how grateful he was to meet his wife during his time on campus, former Leatherneck women's basketball standout Olivia Kaufmann.

"The Purple and Gold Gala always serves as a great kickoff to the new academic year, and I'm grateful to all those who came out in support of our student-athletes and spirit squads," said Bubb. "I want to thank everyone who attended to make the 35th annual event a great one and a special thanks to Lowderman Auction Company for running our live auction!"
