Doubleheader Ends in Pair of Losses

Western Illinois closed its series against Eastern Illinois on Sunday, dropping two games against the Panthers

CHARLESTON, IL - After a Saturday loss on a walk-off home run, the Leathernecks looked for redemption in a Sunday doubleheader against Eastern Illinois. Unfortunately for Western, both games ended with a score of 1-6 in favor of the Panthers.

Sunday's first game started well for the Leathernecks, as Valerie Combs and Rylee Boone got on immediately, putting runners at first and second. Bella Alvarez drove in Combs with a single, and the Leathernecks went to the bottom of the first with a 1-0 lead. Lillie Wools got the start, and despite walking two in the first inning, she got out of it by coaxing three groundouts.

After the Leathernecks went down in order in the second, Eastern took the lead in the bottom half of the frame with a two-RBI single. Western got the bases loaded in the third thanks to singles from Abrianna Gracia and Malia Robertson, followed up by a hit by pitch from Alvarez. The inning would end without the Leathernecks getting on the board. Eastern added two more runs in the third on a home run, making it a 4-1 ballgame. Western's offense stagnated after stranding three, as the Leathernecks only recorded two more hits in the game's final four innings. Eastern scored two runs on two hits in the fifth, taking a 6-1 lead that held for the remainder of the game.

In game two, Emily Price started on the bump to close the series. The Western bats went down in order to start the game, then Price returned the favor by forcing a double play to end the first. After Western went one-two-three in the second, Eastern led off with a double but another double play from the Leathernecks ended the frame tied at zero.

Eastern broke through in the third inning, scoring four runs on three hits. Malia Robertson broke up the no-hitter in the fourth with a double, but no runs scored for the Leathernecks. Raven Morrison came in for Price in the fourth and threw a scoreless inning to start her afternoon. Gabreia Drager led off the fifth getting on base via hit by pitch, and Gracia brought her home with a two-out single. Eastern got back their four-run lead in the fifth, first scoring on a bases-loaded walk before a sacrifice fly brought the score to 6-1.

Kaylee Ketcherside got a one-out walk in the sixth before a double play ended the inning. Kathryn McChristy came in to pitch in the sixth, and she struck out the first batter she saw on her way to a scoreless inning. Western ended the game with a one-two-three seventh, as both games ended with a 6-1 score.

Western Illinois softball is back at home on Friday, starting a three-game series with Morehead State.
