Western Takes Series-Opening Loss

Morehead State took home a 10-2 win on Friday afternoon

MACOMB, IL - Western Illinois kicked off a three-game series with Morehead State on Friday afternoon. The Eagles took an early lead and never trailed as they beat the Leathernecks 10-2.

The Eagles led things off against Western starter Lillie Wools with a three-run first inning on three hits. Leatherneck sophomore Rylee Boone drew a walk in the first but the Leathernecks failed to answer back as the first inning concluded with a 3-0 score in favor of the Eagles.

Wools then put down the Morehead bats in order, getting her first strikeout of the day in the second frame. Luna led off the second with a single, but a pair of strikeouts and a fielder's choice ended the inning with no runs.

Morehead tacked on a fourth run in the third, as Raven Morrison entered the game for Wools with two outs. Malia Robertson and Boone led off the third with singles, and Robertson stole her twelfth base of the year. However, the speedy freshman was thrown out at home on Boone's single, and the third inning ended with a score of 4-0.

The Morehead State offense kept humming into the fourth inning, increasing their lead to seven runs. Luna led off the bottom of the fourth with a walk, and a single from Pavy moved a runner into scoring position. Western ended the inning again without a run, as Morehead threatened to end the game early going into the fifth.

Morrison shut down the Eagles in the fifth, and the Western bats got something going in the bottom of the frame. Despite back-to-back strikeouts to lead things off, a walk from Bella Alvarez gave the Leathernecks a baserunner to work with. Freshman catcher Valerie Combs hit a double deep into left-center field, and scored Alvarez on the play, getting Western Illinois on the board. After Maria Luna got on base successfully for the third straight time, this time via walk, Sophia Sanchez hit a double to left that scored Combs to cut the lead to five.

In the sixth, Morehead scored three off Leatherneck pitcher Kathryn McChristy, increasing the lead to eight, despite three strikeouts in the inning from the sophomore. Robertson and Boone singled in the sixth, but Western failed to extend the game, ending the game 10-2 in six innings.

Western will take on Morehead in a doubleheader on Saturday, coming at 12 and 2:30 PM.
