Western Splits Doubleheader, Ends Day With Walk-Off Win

The Leathernecks split the Saturday doubleheader with Morehead State but ended on a high note.

MACOMB, IL - The Leathernecks finished off their second home series of the year on Saturday, playing two against the Eagles of Morehead State. After a 10-2 loss Friday afternoon, Western looked to get back on track as they entered the day on a five-game losing streak.

Western took an early lead in game one, as Malia Robertson reached on an error and immediately stole second and third, and would reach home on a sacrifice fly to take a 1-0 lead into the second. Emily Price got the start in game one for Western, and the senior was perfect through three innings. Price fanned two batters in the first, and one batter each in both the second and third innings. She allowed her first hit of the game in the fourth but kept the Eagles off the board exiting the frame.

The WIU offense stalled after the first, as Megan Leonard and Valerie Combs collected hits in the second and fourth innings, respectively. The 1-0 score held until the fifth, when a triple and squeeze bunt tied the game. After Western went down in order in the fifth, the Morehead bats got going, scoring four runs on five hits as they took a 5-1 lead in the frame. Western's offense wouldn't see a baserunner until two outs in the ninth when back-to-back two-out singles from Beth Pavy and Leonard threatened a rally. However, the Eagles put Western away to secure a four-run victory and the series.

In game two, Raven Morrison started in the circle for the Leathernecks. Morrison walked a pair of batters in the first but got out of the inning scoreless. Robertson singled and Bella Alvarez doubled in the bottom of the first, but the 0-0 score still held.

Morehead took a 1-0 lead in the second, on a sacrifice fly. Western wouldn't get another hit until the third when again Robertson and Alvarez both singled, but a double play ended the inning. The Eagles added another run in the fourth on a sacrifice fly, putting Western in danger of a sweep. The Leathernecks made it a game in the bottom of the fourth, with the first five batters of the inning reaching base safely. Gabriela Drager hit a single that scored Alivia Beard, and Cynthia Hull drew a pinch-hit walk that tied the game at two. With the bases loaded and no outs, Western failed to take the lead as the inning ended at two-all.

Price entered for Morrison in the fourth, and she only allowed one baserunner in three innings of work, taking Western to the seventh tied at two apiece. Malia Robertson hit her third leadoff single of the game, then stole second to put the winning run in scoring position. After Alvarez drew a walk, a wild pitch moved the runners to second and third. Combs hit a soft grounder to short, but the speedy Robertson beat the throw to home as the Leathernecks avoided the series sweep and picked up a big conference win.

Western heads to SIUE next week, taking on the Cougars in a three-game series from April 6-7.
