Lindenwood Invite Marks Next Stop For Leatherneck Softball

Western Illinois will play Green Bay and Bellarmine twice each this weekend, playing four games in 24 hours.

Weekend Opponents:
Green Bay holds a 3-7 record coming into the Lindenwood Invite, after playing a pair of five-game tournaments. They have beaten LIU twice, once in extra innings, and Southern once, also in extra innings. Only four of Green Bay's games in 2024 have ended in seven innings, as four of their games have ended in five innings. The Bellarmine Knights (5-5) come into the Lindenwood Invite having split their ten games played in the 2024 season. The Knights have won four of their last five coming into the series, picking up wins vs. St. Bonaventure, Cornell, Butler, and Siena. They are led by ace Claire Lehmkuhler, who has a 1.65 ERA over 34 innings pitched coming into the tournament. 

The Season So Far:
The Leathernecks started 2-6, winning against a solid Northern Iowa squad in the UNI-Dome, before winning one in a three-game series at Arkansas-Pine Bluff. Western then swept Mississippi Valley State in a doubleheader and went 2-3 in a tournament at Murray State, beating Murray State and IUPUI to get to a record of 6-9. 

Up in the OVC:
As of March 1, Western Illinois ranks first in the OVC in stolen bases with 30. Speedy Freshman Malia Robertson is first in the conference in individual steals with nine swipes.  The Leathernecks are second in doubles (24) and third in hits (117). On the mound, Western ranks second in the conference in strikeouts (85). Western also allows an ERA of 3.11 on the season, the second-best in the conference. 

Alvarez's Awesome Week:
Leatherneck Senior Bella Alvarez picked up Western Illinois' first conference honor of the year on Monday. The corner infielder was tabbed the OVC's Player of the Week after racking up 10 RBIs, two home runs, and two doubles as she batted above .400 in an eight-game stretch. Alvarez currently leads the Leathernecks in RBIs (14), Total Bases (25), and OPS (1.063). 

What's Next for Western:
Conference play is just around the corner, as Western heads to UT-Martin for a three-game series from March 9-10. After a pair of midweek games at Kansas City and Saint Louis, WIU will host its home opener against Tennessee Tech from March 16-17.
