WIU Drops Overtime Battle with Southern Indiana

MACOMB, IL - Western Illinois women's basketball fell in overtime for the second consecutive game as Southern Indiana beat WIU 96-89. WIU moves to 16-11 overall and 7-9 in Ohio Valley play.

Western Illinois offense ran through Addi Brownfield to start Saturday's matchup. Brownfield had the Leathernecks first five points as WIU trailed 7-5 four minutes into the opening quarter. After two Mallory McDermott free throws tied the game, Raegan McCowan started her record performance day. A layup and two free throws gave McCowan a quick four points, and WIU led 11-9. McCowan kept the offensive pressure going as she extended WIU's lead to 19-11 with her first three-pointer. Kennedy Flanagan and McCowan ended the quarter with a pair of baskets as WIU led 23-16 after one.

USI opened the second quarter on a 10-0 run before McCowan got a basket to fall. Alissa Dins got a right-handed layup down by two (27-25) to fall, tying the game at 27. Teams traded points through the middle half of the quarter as Southern Indiana opened up their largest lead at the time, 33-29. Anna Deets started the late WIU run with a layup, a Din's free throw, and finally, a McCowan three as WIU was back in front 35-33. Allie Meadows hit a three to end the half as WIU led by one 40-39.

Coming out of the halftime break, both teams could not gain separation as it was tied at 43 with 8:30 left in the third. WIU offense found a spark from long range as Deets and Meadows knocked down back-to-back three, pushing Western Illinois in front 49-43. Southern Indiana fought back as the game was tied at 53 with 4:02 left in the third. WIU reclaimed the lead from the free throw line, with McCowan knocking down two. USI had the final three points of the third quarter as they took a 64-61 advantage into the final ten minutes.

McCowan kept the offensive showcase with six points as WIU held a 70-68 advantage. Down 76-70 with 3:45 left in the quarter, hit a three from the left wing, bringing the Leathernecks within one possession. McCowan then took over, scoring six straight points as WIU tied the game at 81. Both teams stayed scoreless the rest of the quarter as WIU headed to overtime for the second straight game.

USI opened the extra frame with a three before McDermott and McCowan responded with four straight points, pushing Western Illinois in front 85-84. Southern Indiana turned on the jets as they battled back for a 96-89 win.

Raegan McCowan set the all-time individual point total in a game inside Western Hall with 45 points on 13-27 shooting. McCowan added eight rebounds and a couple of assists to her stat line. WIU had two others in double figures: Allie Meadows scored 11, and Anna Deets scored 10. 

Western Illinois is back inside Western Hall next Thursday and Saturday to finish the regular season against Eastern Illinois and SIUE.
