WIU Women Drop Conference Opener to Tennessee Tech

MACOMB, Ill- Western Illinois Women's Basketball fought hard in a tough matchup at home against Tennessee Tech but ultimately fell short, losing 72-52 at Western Hall on Tuesday night.

Mia Nicastro led the Leathernecks with an impressive performance, contributing 18 points on 8-of-16 shooting and grabbing 9 rebounds. Addi Brownfield added 12 points, including two three-pointers, while Raegan McCowan chipped in 14 points and showed her versatility on both ends of the court having one steal and 2 defensive rebounds.

The Leathernecks excelled in the paint, scoring 26 of their points inside, thanks in large part to Nicastro's strong post presence. Brownfield and McCowan's ability to attack the basket also stood out. The Leathernecks kept the game competitive in the first half, with the score being even at 30 at the break.

Despite their efforts, Western Illinois struggled to maintain consistency in the second half, scoring only 22 points. The team was out-rebounded 39-29 and shot just 27% from beyond the arc. Turnovers also plagued the Leathernecks, with Tennessee Tech capitalizing for 12 points off 12 Leatherneck turnovers.

With the loss, Western Illinois drops to 5-4 overall and 0-1 in the OVC. The Leathernecks will look to bounce back on Saturday as they will travel to St. Charles to take on the Lindenwood Lions. Tip-off is scheduled for 1 p.m.
