SAINT CHARLES, MO – Despite a strong individual performance by Raegan McCowan, Western Illinois narrowly fell to Lindenwood 63-59 on Saturday afternoon at Robert F. Hyland Arena.
McCowan spearheaded the Leathernecks' effort, contributing a game-high 26 points while shooting 7-for-14 from the field and a perfect 12-for-12 from the free-throw line. Her scoring was complemented by six rebounds and a key block.
Western Illinois (5-5, 0-2 OVC) started strong, taking a 31-18 lead into halftime. However, the Leathernecks struggled to maintain their momentum as Lindenwood (6-5, 2-0 OVC) surged in the second half. The home team outscored Western Illinois 45-28 across the final two quarters, including a decisive 23-point fourth quarter.
Mallory McDermott added 11 points for the Leathernecks, including three timely three-pointers. Mia Nicastro chipped in with 7 points and 4 rebounds, while Addi Brownfield contributed 4 points, 4 rebounds, and 2 blocks before fouling out late in the game.
Although the Leathernecks nearly won the battle on the boards with 34 rebounds compared to Lindenwood's 35, their struggles with turnovers and a cold shooting stretch in the fourth quarter made the difference in the game.
WIU will now look to regroup on their home floor as they return to Western Hall for their next game against Clarke Univeristy on December 30. Tip-off is scheduled for 7 p.m.
