Macomb, Ill- Western Illinois dropped their first game of the season in a home matchup against Missouri. Despite their efforts, the Leathernecks fell short, losing 75-55. This game was attended by 1,853 fans.
Western Illinois demonstrated resilience, particularly in the first and third quarters, scoring 17 points in each. Raegan McCowan led the way for the Leathernecks scoring 27 points, including a solid showing from the free-throw line, hitting 6-of-10 attempts. McCowan also contributed defensively, securing seven rebounds. Addi Brownfield added 12 points and showcased her skills on the defensive side of the floor having a game-high five steals, highlighting her defensive prowess.
The team shined in their defensive efforts as they registered 12 steals and five blocks, with Mia Nicastro leading the team in blocks with three. WIU excelled in forcing turnovers, converting Missouri's 21 turnovers into 13 points. They also won the points in the paint battle against the Tigers, having 22 points in the paint compared to Missouri's 18. WIU also converted in the fast-break having eight points, showcasing their ability to capitalize on transitional opportunities.
Missouri's sharp shooting, particularly from beyond the arc, and the contribution from the bench was the difference in the game. Missouri shot 12-25 (48%) from three and shot 26-59 (44%) from the floor. The Tigers bench had 37 points compared to the Leathernecks 6.
The Leathernecks will now travel to Chicago State on Monday night to take on the Cougars. Tip-off is scheduled for 6 p.m.
