Leathernecks Earn One-All Draw With SIUE

Western Illinois took a one-nil lead late in the first half, before SIUE equalized in the 78th minute.

MACOMB, Ill. - Western Illinois University Women's Soccer just picked up its first win of the 2024 season, defeating Southeast Missouri State 2-1 on Sunday. Heading back home to John MacKenzie Alumni Field, the Leathernecks looked to keep their momentum as they faced off against SIUE on Thursday afternoon. Western Illinois capitalized on a chance late in the first half to pick up a one-zero lead, but SIUE equalized with twelve minutes to go as the match ended in a one-all draw.

SIUE started things with a trio of early corner kicks, but Western's defense cleared them away to keep things knotted at zero.

Claire Brown got a great chance in the thirteenth minute as she fired a shot from the edge of the box, but missed wide.

Around the 20th minute, the Leatherneck defense had a great stretch of solid plays, as they blocked three shots in two minutes.

The two sides went back and forth with chances until the 37th minute, when Leatherneck forwards Callie McMurtrey and Landry McCoid got free on a break. McCoid played a great ball in to McMurtrey from the halfway mark and left McMurtrey all alone with the Cougar keeper. McMurtrey then made a smart play to dump it back off to McCoid, who buried it from about 20 yards out to give the Leathernecks the lead.

The one-nil score held until the break, but not before Autumn Wilson came in clutch with a goal-saving, goal-line clearance to keep the Leathernecks ahead.

Things started off pretty slow in the second half before SIUE got five corners in eight minutes from the 54th to the 61st minute. Leatherneck keeper Ariel Bernard made an incredible save to deflect a shot heading for the top corner of the net.

SIUE finally broke through in the 78th minute, scoring on their 16th corner kick attempt of the match. Despite being outshot 23-8, and losing the corner battle 17-2, WIU pulled out the draw, holding position in the OVC as they currently stand in sixth place, pending the results of Thursday night's matches.

WIU is back at John MacKenzie Alumni Field on Sunday, hosting Little Rock at 1 PM.
