Leatherneck Soccer Falls at SIU-E

EDWARDSVILLE – The Western Illinois University men's soccer went on the road Saturday and dropped a pivotal Ohio Valley Conference match to league-leading Southern Illinois-Edwardsville, 3-0.

The Cougars (8-4-3 overall, 6-1-1 in OVC) had a quick start to the match, scoring in the ninth minute.

Western Illinois (7-9-1 overall, 2-6 in OVC) was able to hold SIU-E down for 10 minutes, but the Cougars notched their second goal at the 19:05 mark. SIU-E added their third goal of the half two minutes later, taking a 3-0 lead into the break.

Western Illinois finished with six shots, one on goal. Keeper Micah Ramirez finished with three saves and six shots on the net.

The Leathernecks hold a tenuous grip on sixth place and the final spot in the conference tournament as Southern Indiana drew with Eastern Illinois, 2-2- on Saturday. Western Illinois has six points in league play while the Screaming Eagles have five and Panthers have four.

Western Illinois is next in action on Thursday, hosting Incarnate Word at 3 p.m.
