MACOMB, IL – Western Illinois volleyball fell to Morehead State on Saturday (Sept. 30) morning in straight sets inside Johnson Arena. The Leathernecks move to 3-10 overall and 2-2 in OVC play.

SET 1
Morehead State came out on a tear to start the first set. The Eagles jumped out to a 4-0 lead before Elizabeth Ziegler ended the run with a kill. WIU chipped away at the early deficit as Julianna Schmidt's kill would bring WIU within two at 6-4. Morehead State responded with a 5-2 run, pulling in front 11-6. MSU would not look back as a 5-0 run in the middle of the set put them in complete control 17-8. WIU would cut the lead to seven after another Schmidt kill at 17-10. Grace Kremer's kill late in the first set would bring WIU within six (23-17), but WIU would fall in set 1 25-18.

SET 2
The second set started back and forth. The Leathernecks and Eagles would see the score tied nine times in the first nine points. WIU would jump out to a 9-8 lead after a Ziegler kill, but MSU responded with a 5-0 run to pull in front 13-9, forcing a WIU timeout. Morehead State extended their lead midway through the second set with a 6-3 run in front 19-12. Kills by Ziegler and Schmidt cut the deficit to six, but that is the closest WIU would get as they dropped set two 25-17.

SET 3
An early run by MSU would be the difference maker in set three. Morehead State jumped in front 5-0 before Cruse ended the run with a kill. The Eagles responded, capping off a 13-3 opening run to start the third set. WIU would go on a 3-0 run to bring themselves within striking distance. Schmidt started the run with a kill and had an MSU attack error and an Annika Black kill to finish it. Morehead would find more separation, taking the final set 25-14.

Keyana Cruse led the way with eight kills and 13 digs. Juliana Schmidt had seven kills. Maggie Craker dished out 19 assists, and Karli Wenzel had 12 digs. WIU had four team blocks and two service aces.
