Leathernecks Drop Non Conference Matchup

| By:
Box Score MACOMB, IL – Western Illinois volleyball dropped a non-conference matchup to Chicago State inside Western Hall on Tuesday (Oct. 3) night. WIU falls to 3-11 overall on the season.

Set 1
WIU had to battle from behind early on Tuesday night. Chicago State opened the first set on a 7-0 run before Elizabeth Ziegler's kill put WIU on the board. WIU traded points with the Cougars as Chicago State was ahead 15-7 at the halfway point. Two attack errors and a Grace Kremer service ace would see WIU cut the deficit to five (17-12), forcing a Chicago State timeout. The Cougars attacked the rest of the set, taking it 25-16.

Set 2
WIU's defense opened the scoring in set two. Julianna Schmidt would get one of her solo blocks, giving Western Illinois a 1-0 lead. CSU would take a 3-1 lead before WIU would tie the set at four, five, and six. With the score tied at 6-6, WIU leaned on their offense after that with a 5-0 run. Keyana Cruse started it with a kill and then headed back to the service line for an ace. A CSU attack error sent them into a timeout. Out of the break, Kennedy Adair went back-to-back in kills, putting WIU up 11-6. Chicago State climbed into the set, tying it at 16 and 17 before pulling ahead 20-17, forcing a WIU timeout. Teams traded points the rest of the set as Chicago State took set two 25-20

Set 3
A lot like the first set, WIU fell behind early. Schmidt and Adair both had the first two kills of the set as WIU fell behind 7-2. Chicago State pulled in front 15-7 before a 3-0 run by the Leathernecks that was capped off by a Schmidt solo block forced a CSU timeout. After the timeout, CSU would go on a 10-3 run, finishing the final set 25-13.

The Macomb native Kennedy Adair led the Leathernecks with eight kills. Julianna Schmidt was behind her with six. Karli Wenzel and Maggie Craker had double-digit digs with 13 and 10, respectively. Craker dished out 21 assists on the evening. WIU had four total blocks, and Schmidt had three solo blocks.

WIU continues their homestand this weekend, matching up with Little Rock on Friday (Oct. 6) and Saturday (Oct. 7).
