Western Starts Hot, But Fall Due To Late Goal

The Leathernecks lost 1-2 to Northern Kentucky on Saturday

HIGHLAND HEIGHTS, KY -- After a tough match last Saturday, the Leathernecks looked to quickly get back on track as they took on Northern Kentucky on Tuesday evening.

Freshman Xavier Gagnon opened the scoring in the seventh minute. Gagnon's goal marked his second of the season, after he scored the equalizer vs. Eastern Illinois earlier this year. Grad student Kyle Owen grabbed his first assist of the year on the goal.

The Norse would equalize eleven minutes later, as Jason Purks put one in the back of the net that would be the only goal in the next 70 minutes of play.

Owen had a triplet of chances late in the match, but would not be able to convert the would-be goal that would give the Leathernecks the lead.

With under three minutes to go, Caleb Ragland had an excellent chance, as he was all alone with only the Northern Kentucky keeper in front of him, but Ragland's shot was denied by the goalie.

In the 89th minute, Northern Kentucky was awarded a free kick, and the Norse would grab the game-winner off the set piece. The Norse would dribble the ball out in the closing seconds, winning 2-1.

Looking ahead, the Leathernecks will resume Summit League play on Saturday when they travel to take on Omaha.
