Leathernecks Take Tough Loss on Road

Western lost 0-1 to SIUE on Tuesday

EDWARDSVILLE, IL -- Although the box score reads 0-1 in favor of the Cougars, Western put together one of its best efforts in the season on Tuesday. The Leathernecks kept undefeated Southern Illinois-Edwardsville scoreless until the 79th minute, when the Cougars scored the only goal of the match.

Keeper Youssou Ouendeno was a standout performer for the Leathernecks, as the junior from Paris, France strung together 7 saves on 15 shot attempts from the Cougars. Ouendeno made his fourth start of the season on Tuesday, as he's now up to 18 saves on the year with a GA/G of 1.00. Second-year starter Oscar Olingdahl recorded three shots with one on target, leading the way as the team totaled 4 shots on goal in the match.

Western was out-shot 15-9 in Tuesday's game, and SIUE won the corner battle as well, 9-4.

Tuesday's match marks the fourth consecutive time the Leathernecks have lost by a score of 0-1 against SIUE. Western falls to 0-5-1 on the season, and remains without a goal. SIUE improves to 4-0-1 on the year, an impressive start for the Cougars.

Looking ahead, the Leathernecks will host future OVC foe Eastern Illinois on Saturday, Sept. 16 at 1 PM. Then, they start conference play by welcoming Oral Roberts to Macomb for one last ride in the Summit League.
