Porras' Late Heroics Lift Leathernecks Over Panthers

Western picked up its first win against Eastern Illinois on Saturday

MACOMB, IL -- The Leathernecks got the big win they were looking for on Sunday, getting one in miraculous fashion. Western picked up a 2-1 win over in-state rival Eastern Illinois. This is Western's first win of the season, as they now improve to 1-5-1 on the year.

In a competitive first half, both teams saw many chances from counter-attacks, but neither team would score until the 38th minute. The Panthers got the first goal of the game when Max Allen slotted one in. There wouldn't be much action until the second half.

In the 50th minute, the Leathernecks finally picked up their first goal of the season, as forward Xavier Gagnon headed one in the bottom left corner, thanks to the cross of Oskar Grevelius. The freshmen linking up meant that these are their first points in a Western uniform.

Western would keep the pressure on, trying to go for the win as Coach Johnson rotated in many attacking players throughout the half. Kyle Owen got his fair share of chances, as he had three shots on goal in the second half, but none were converted.

The Leathernecks would get three corners in the 90th minute, as the first one was headed in by Owen, but saved and out for another. The second one was deflected out on an Eastern player. As freshman Diego Porras lined up to take the third corner, he only had a few seconds left on the clock. Striking the ball, launched it directly into the top left corner, sailing past the Panthers' keeper. Western would take the lead with two seconds left, and pick up their first win of the season. The freshman from Victoria Tamaulipas, Mexico got the Leathernecks the winner, and in thrilling form.

Looking ahead, Western will open conference play next Saturday, when the Leathernecks host Oral Roberts.
