Leatherneck Cross Country Finish Second in Opener

Western Illinois men and women finish behind Bradley

MACOMB – The Western Illinois University cross country team made its season debut Friday as the men and women took to the course at Spring Lake Park.

Both squads brought home second-place finishes as Bradley took both the women and men races.

The Western Illinois women opened the season finishing second overall, scoring 59 points. The Leathernecks and Northern Illinois each scored 59, but Western Illinois earned second place based upon the sixth-place tiebreaker. The meet distance was 4K.

Bradley won the meet with 17 points.

Madison Trevena led the way for the Leathernecks, finishing fourth overall. Trevena crossed the finish line in 14 minutes, 24.5 seconds.

Freshman Lydia Bennett had a successful debut for Western Illinois, finishing 12th overall in 15:07. Faith Procopio and Meg Simmons were next to cross the finish line for the Leathernecks, finishing 14th and 15th overall, while scoring 13 and 14 points, respectively. Returnee Procopio finished in 15:25 while newcomer Simmons was right with her, registering the same time.

Aurora Dominguez closed out Western Illinois' scoring runners, finishing 18th overall (16 points) in 15:52.7.

Hannah Steinmeyer was next for the Leathernecks, finishing 20th in 16:10.00. Kayden Gilmore (23rd, 16:22.9), Bailey Boddicker (24th, 16:29.2), Krissy Petrou (28th, 17:27.8), Passion Crew (29th, 17:55.5) and Ellie Bauer (34th, 19:44.1) closed out the Leatherneck performances.

The Western Illinois men matched the women's performance, also finishing in second. The Leathernecks totaled 47 points while Bradley scored 27 to take the title.

Logan Lommel led Western Illinois in the 6k race, finishing fourth overall with a time of 18:21.8. Lommel was the lone non-Bradley runner to finish in the top 12.

Freshman Logan Beckmier had a solid debut for the Leathernecks, scoring nine points overall, while finishing 13th. Beckmier's 19:19.3 was just head of Robert Perry, who was Western Illinois' next finisher. Perry was 15th overall, scoring 10 points, clocking in at 19:29.2.

Also making his WIU debut was freshman Sean Hudspath, who scored 11 points while finishing 18th in 19:54.2. Isaiah Moorman was the fifth Leatherneck to finish, crossing in 20th, scoring 13 points and finishing in 20:20.0.

Caleb Ware and Isaac Jones finished back-to-back with Ware finishing 22nd in 21:07.0 and Jones finishing 23rd in 21:11.9.

Max Lupo rounded out the runners for WIU, finishing in 29th place with a 24:09.3.

Western Illinois now faces a two-week break, next competing at the Illinois State Redbird Invite on Friday, September 15.
