Western Illinois Women's Soccer Opens Exhibition Season

Leathernecks drop 1-0 contest to Drake

MACOMB -- The Western Illinois University women's soccer team kicked off the season and the 2023-24 athletic calendar on Wednesday, hosting Drake in an exhibition match at John MacKenzie Alumni Field in Macomb.

A goal late in the first half gave the Bulldogs a 1-0 win over the Leatherneck in a match that was mostly played during rainy conditions.

The match was scoreless the bulk of the first half, but with two minutes before intermission, Drake's Hannah Olson scored on a header off of a Layla Kelbel feed. Neither team managed to dent the scoreboard after the break as Drake held on for the victory.

Isabel Navas Rodriguez started in net for the Leathernecks and played all 90 minutes, registering six saves. Claire Brown, Janelle Minor and Sydnee Sagal each tallied shots for Western Illinois.

The Leathernecks continue the exhibition season on Monday, hosting Northeast Community College. The match is the first of a double-header, with the Western Illinois women playing at 3 p.m. and the men following.
