Leathernecks close exhibition season with victory

MACOMB -- After an opening half that saw the Western Illinoi women's soccer team control the bulk of the action but score no goals, it was only a matter of time before the Leathernecks dented the scoreboard and pulled away from Northeast during Monday's exhibition match at the Northwest Field.

That break though came at the 52:00 mark as Western Illinois scored three goals in five minutes to take control. The Leathernecks would add another, getting the 4-0 win over Northeast.

Freshman Kelsi McThenia put the Leathernecks on the scoreboard, scoring with her left foot from inside the 18-yard box. While Western waited 52 minutes for its first goal of the match, the team did not have to wait nearly as long for the second score.

Sydnee Sagal made it 2-0 less than two minutes later off an assist from Elise Bush. Bush added a goal of her own three minutes later, making it a 3-0 match. Sachiko Gamo capped the scoring for the Leathernecks, tallying Western Illinois' fourth goal of the match at the 68:00 mark.

Isabel Navas Rodriguez started in net for the Leathernecks, playing the bulk of the match. The keeper made a trio of sparkling saves to keep the shutout in tact as freshman Avery Weaver came on and finished the job.

The Leathernecks end the exhibition season and open the season on Thursday, hosting Northern Illinois at 4 p.m.
