Western Illinois Athletics Announces Hall of Fame Inductees

Newest Hall of Fame Class to be inducted Friday, October 27

MACOMB – Western Illinois University Athletics is proud to announce its latest class for the Leatherneck Hall of Fame. An induction ceremony and banquet will be held in their honor on Friday, October 27.

The Class of 2023 features two teams and six individuals.

Those being inducted are the 1977 Women's Badminton Team, the 1955 Men's Basketball Team, football's Edgerton Hartwell (1998-2000) and Matt Barr (2007-2010), golfers Tim Streng (2003-2007) and Kyle Peterman (2007-2010), men's basketball player Ceola Clark III (2008-2013) and women's basketball player Tiffany Cornelius Tyler (2001-2004). The Hall of Fame Class is the first to be inducted since 2019. The event went into hiatus due to the COVID-19 pandemic.  
 
Tim Streng – Golf (2003-2007)
Streng is one of Western Illinois' most decorated golfers. He was an NCAA Division I Championship qualifier and part of three conference championship teams.

In 2007, he was a National All America, the Mid-Continent Conference Meet Champion and the Mid-Continent Golfer of the Year. He was a four-time All-Conference Selection and a seven-time Conference Golfer of the Week.

He holds the second-lowest 54-hole score in program history (205; Hawkeye Intercollegiate September 10-11, 2005), his 36-hole round of 138 is tied for third in program history (D.A. Weibring Intercollegiate Sept. 13-15, 2003).

He also holds the fourth-lowest 18-hole round (65) in program history, shooting it twice (Hawkeye Intercollegiate September 10-11, 2005; Murray State Invitational Oct. 3-4, 2005).
 
Edgerton Hartwell – football (1998-2000)
Hartwell was a two-time Gateway Conference Defensive Player of the Year (1999, 2000) and the 2000 Buck Buchanan Award Winner, given to the best defensive player in FCS Football. He was a two-time All-Conference Defensive First Teamer and a member of the Gateway Conference All Newcomer Team (1998).

He holds the program record for most solo tackles in a game (18 vs. Missouri State, Oct. 9. 1999), the top two spots for solo tackles in a season (122 in 2000, 107 in 199) and is the program leader for total tackles in a season (191 in 2000).

He is also the program leader for career tackles (512) and second in program history in career solo tackles (308) and assisted tackles (204).

Also among his national awards, in 2000 Hartwell was named Associated Press First Team, AFCA First Team, Football Gazette Linebacker of the Year, a member of the Football Gazette First Team, a Walter Camp First Teamer and a member The Sports Network First Team.

He played for the Baltimore Ravens from 2001-2004 and the Atlanta Falcons from 2005-2006.
 
Matt Barr Football (2007-2010)
Barr was the 2010 Gateway Conference Offensive Player of the Year as well as a First-Team All-Conference member. He was the 2010 runner-up for the Walter Payton Award, given to the top offensive player in FCS and was named to The Sports Network Second Team.

He holds the program record for most rushing yards by a WIU quarterback in a single game (125 vs. Sam Houston, Sept. 18, 2010) and season (449, 2010) as well as the most rushing TDs by a quarterback in a season (seven, 2010) and career (14, 2010).

Barr also holds the record for passing yards in a season (3410, 2010); most touchdown passes in a season (27, 2010); and the fifth-most career passing yards (6976) in program history. He has the second-most passing yards in a game (452 vs. Indiana State, Oct. 30, 2010) he also completed 22-25 passes vs. Illinois State for an .880 completing percentage, the highest single-game performance while also throwing a for a single-game best, six touchdowns.

He has the most total offense in a single season (2010: 3859 yards; 3410 passing yards, 449 rushing); Most total offense per game (296.8 ypg, 2010) and the second-most all-purpose yards in a career (7882).

Academically, Barr received the President's Academic Excellence Award, Lincoln Academy Student Laureate Award (2009) and First Team All-Academic All-Conference (2008-2010).
 
Ceola Clark III Men's basketball 2008-2013
Clark had a storied career at Western Illinois playing basketball for the Leathernecks.

Clark was a two-time Summit League Defensive Player of the Year (2009-10; 2011-12) and a two-time First-Team All Summit League member (2009-10; 2012-13)

Among the Leatherneck leaders, Clark is tied for the most three-point makes in a single-season (86, 2011-12) and the program leader in career steals (242) and games played (124). He led Western Illinois in scoring and assists three different times and was the squad's leader in steals four times.

His 464 career assists and 247 career three-pointers rank second all-time. He is ninth in program history in career points (1472) and field goals made (471)
 
Kyle Peterman Men's golf
Peterman holds multiple program records, including the lowest 18-hole round (63, Beu/Mussatto Invitational, March 29, 2010) and the lowest 54-hole round (204, -12, Beu/Mussatto Invitational March 29-30, 2010).

He was the Conference Golfer of the Year in 2007-08 and named all-conference three times (2007-08; 2008-09, 2009-10).
 
Tiffany Cornelius Tyler Women's basketball (2001-2004)
Cornelius was named Conference Player of the Year during the 2003-04 season. She was a two-time First Team All-Conference Member (2002-03, 2003-04) and a member of the conference All Newcomer Team (2000-01).

She has the second-highest single-season field goal percentage (.590, 2002-03) and the fifth-most rebounds in program history (733).

She set a program record going 10-10 from the field vs. Rockford and made 21 consecutive free throws. She scored 1412 career points, which ranks her eighth all-time in program history, and led her team in scoring and rebounding in back-to-back seasons.
 
1976-77 Badminton Team
The 1976-77 Women's Badminton Team set the standard for Leatherneck athletics nationally. The squad finished third in the nation, going 50-7 overall. They finished in the top eight finishes in the national singles and doubles tournament. The team was represented at the National Tournament by Nancy Stark, Monica Malone, Sandy Szopinski and Laurie Hoge.

The squad won the IAIAW State Tournament.

The team was led by Hoge, who was the was singles state tournament champion and Stark, who teamed with Hoge to capture the state doubles championship.

Players include Laurie Hoge, Nancy Stark, Sandy Szopinski, Monica Malone, Wendy Justus, Cheryl Douglas, Debra Knight, Gail Ross Thyer and Denise Zeman. The team was led by coach Donna Phillips.

1954-55 Men's Basketball Team
The 1954-55 Western Illinois Men's Basketball team had an incredible year. The team went 27-3 overall, 11-1 in conference play, tying for the second-most wins in program history. Their .900 win percentage is third-best in program history.

The team went on to finish in third place in the NAIA. After falling to Southeast Oklahoma State 68-61 in the semifinals, the team beat Arkansas Tech in the third-place game, 77-74.

The team averaged 83.2 points per game, fifth-highest in program history.

Their +25 rebound margin per game is the highest in Western Illinois men's basketball program history.

Team members include Lupe Rios, Gene Talbot, Marshall Stoner, Charles Schramm, Don Talbot, Ron Nikcevich, Ike Wright, Jim Thornton, Joe Reynolds, John Henson, Frank Hutt, Ed Flynn, Jim Hunter and Charles Behrends. The team was led by coach, Leroy 'Stix,' Morley. Gene Talbot and Schramm led the team in scoring, each averaging over 15 points per game, while Stoner added over 14 per contest. Charles Schramm averaged over 18 rebounds a game.
